Questions to Ask About Remodeling Quotes
When you plan to remodel a part of your home, it’s a good idea to approach several providers of custom home building services and ask for a quote for your project. You want to be able to choose from several different offers so there’s a higher likelihood of finding what you want based on your design, taste and budget.
But choosing a contractor can get confusing, especially when you’re looking at quotes that seem to be completely different from each other, from the materials to the price. So before choosing a contractor, it’s advisable to ask several questions regarding their quote. Here are some of the questions you should ask:
Is This Quote for Me or Is It a General Quote for Anyone?
You need an itemized scope of work so you can go over the details. Details should include the materials and a specific list of contractor and subcontractor responsibilities or tasks, together with deadlines. It’s impossible to deduce this information just by looking at a general quote. If you ask and the contractor doesn’t know what an itemized scope of work is, look for another provider of home remodeling services.
Will You Provide a Warranty?
The equation is simple: if your contractor covers the work with a warranty or warranties, you are protected from spending more money to fix whatever goes wrong with the completed project. Find out how long the warranty is good for, as well. Unless you’re comfortable with it, it’s best to find another contractor.
How Will We Deal With Change Orders?
Sometimes, projects change during the course of the work. You may have changed your mind about something because you saw a design online that was more to your liking. Can your contractor accommodate the change order? How much will it possibly cost? You don’t want to deal with a contractor that keeps calling to ask for more money because you changed a small thing.
These questions should help you determine whether you’re dealing with the right contractor or not.
Sometimes, however, you might not receive the quote the way you expected the contractor to give it to you. Here are some of the signs that say you shouldn’t call that contractor again:
- They texted you a quote. It’s highly unlikely that the quote was customized to fit your needs.
- They quoted you over the phone.
- They gave you a generalized quote that doesn’t reflect what you told them about your project.
- They won’t even try to change a quote to accommodate your budget.
