4 Tips for a Major Basement Remodel
Compared to a home addition, basement remodeling is a relatively cost-effective way to increase your home’s livable square footage. You can turn it into a guest room, a children’s playroom, a home office or a recreation room. Your trusted custom home builders, J Bryant Boyd Architect Design-Build, offers these helpful tips.
Waterproof Your Basement
It’s best to solve any dampness or flooding problems right from the start. A finished basement is only as good as the design and the quality of work that made it. Talk to someone who specializes in basement or foundation waterproofing problems before you even begin thinking of aesthetics.
Carefully Consult Your Architect or Interior Designer
It’s clear that you’ll want to end up with quality living space in your remodel. An architect or interior designer can help you achieve this. Forethought and careful planning now can help you create a space you want. Let J Bryant Boyd Architect Design-Build, one of the area’s premier design-build firms, help.
Don’t Forget About Air Circulation and Safety
Many basements have few, if any, registers or vents installed. For good air circulation, add openings where necessary. Include a return air duct. Locate it far from the furnace to eliminate the risk of it sucking exhaust fumes back into the house. Install a carbon monoxide detector as well.
Bring in More Light
If you want to introduce more natural light into your basement, you can add new windows or enlarge existing ones. Bonus: bigger windows can serve as additional fire escape routes. Your contractor may also need to dig new window wells or enlarge existing ones. Make sure all window wells have good waterproofing and drainage to protect your new finished basement from flooding and water damage.
