A Look at Modern vs. Contemporary Home Designs

Written by J. Bryant Boyd | Oct. 10, 2018

When it comes to homes, there are two prominent styles that are the go-to options for homeowners: modern and contemporary designs. Many people may think they are one and the same. While they may be alike in certain aspects, custom home builders will confirm that they are anything but.

“Modern design” refers to the period between the early to mid-twentieth century. Mid-century modern was popular in the 50’s and 60’s. In interior design “modern” often encompasses both. “Contemporary design”, on the other hand, doesn’t refer to a specific period. It changes to reflect the popular styles of present-day design. Still, it doesn’t focus on any one style in particular.

Design/build firms like J Bryant Boyd Architect Design-Build can tell you the differences between these designs. Let’s look at the most popular features of both.

Modern or Mid Century Modern

The term “Modern” in interior design actually refers to “Mid Century Modern”. You will recognize it’s clean, unadorned interiors as the use of wood, leather, teak and linen are prominent. Molded plywood, plastic and polished metal are very popular in modern furniture. Furniture pieces are very open and raised off the floor, allowing for an airy feeling. Walls are often white, giving an impression of expansiveness. Modern interiors generally have bare floors. Area rugs are usually wool and neutral in color.

Contemporary

Contemporary design, though ever-changing, freely borrows pieces and styles from different eras. It’s not always designed with the “right now” feel. Furniture and art from the modern era are often used. It also makes use of traditional moldings and millwork. Designs under this category use large windows, unique shapes and an open plan. Contemporary homes harmonize with the surrounding landscape, with their finishes using a lot of fir, cedar and stone. The finishing and furniture have clean lines. Comfort and sustainability are very important.
